St Botolph's Church Choir

St Botolph’s have a long proud tradition of having a large robed choir.  We currently have a choir of around 20 – 25 members of mixed ability with an age ranging from 7 – 70.  Most of the services at St Botolph’s are sung and the choir is an integral part of this. As well as singing hymns the choir sing anthems and the service is normally sung to the setting of the music of John Appleford.  Choir practice takes place on a Friday evening and starts from 7.30 to 9.00 pm.

The music sung by the choir covers a broad spectrum ranging from the 1500’s to the present day incorporating a range of anthems, psalms, Taize to pop songs and ballards.

The choir has been affliated to the Royal School of Church Music since the early 1920’s and currently takes place in its music training scheme called Voice for Life. This encourages all age groups to grow musically and each level of progression see a different colour ribbon. Light Blue, Dark Blue, Green, Red, Purple, Yellow, Gold.

As well as singing in the church the choir takes part in various other events. The Deanery Choir Festival, Festivals in the Cathedral, an outdoor carol service in South Darenth, a concert with the Salvation Army Band and last year managed to sing three 9 Lessons and Carols!

We welcome you to share with us in worship that has been offered here for many hundreds of years. St Botolph’s has a great choral tradition and draws upon a rich inheritance of music from the 16th Century to the present day, some of it sung by the choir alone. In the Anglican tradition this music finds its natural setting in the ancient office of Evensong, a combination of the medieval offices of Vespers and Compline found in the Book of Common Prayer. Here beauty in language and music can speak to us of God in a rich and diverse way. Within this hallowed space you may forget the ceaseless activity of daily life and be still. So why not come and join us?

How do I join? – Please come to the church on a Friday evening (come via the side door next to the hall) at 7.20 pm or speak to Debbie, Clare or Marion or Fr Lawrence on a Sunday morning. Alternatively you can ring Debbie on 01474 532365 or click here to email mailto:debtonians@aol.com
